ANYA JENKINS
Name: Anya Jenkins Nicknames: 'Anya' itself is a nickname of sorts; or her 'human' identity at least. Age: approx. 1147 years old - though she appears to be somewhere in her late twenties. Birthday: Sometime in the 9th century - exact date unknown. Species: Vengeance Demon. Canon or Original: Canon. Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Play By: Emma Caulfield. Height: 5'4. Weight: 119. Eye color: Light Brown. Hair color: Blonde. Body type:Slender.
Likes:
- Honesty.
- Money.
- Coffee.
- Immortality.
- Feeling useful.
- Humanity (though she rarely admits it).
Dislikes:
- Stupidity.
- D'Hoffryn.
- Anyone who tries to manipulate her.
- Cowards.
- Being ignored or dismissed.
- Humanity (yes, she has her days when she dislikes it, too).
Habits:
- Rambling.
- Fidgeting when nervous or restless.
- Practicing the fine art of sarcasm.
Fears:
- Apocalypses. She's been through quite enough of 'em, thanks.
- Feeling trapped.
- Mortality; death in general.
- Bunnies. ...No, seriously.
Strengths:
- Though she's admittedly somewhat naive when it comes to human etiquette, Anya is in fact quite clever and resourceful - and she has a lot more depth than her outwardly blonde, bubbly exterior would suggest.
- She's quite organized; especially when it comes to money and shopkeeping in general.
- Being a vengeance demon who had to pretty much converse with 'clients' universally over the last thousand years, Anya is multi-lingual. She knows most human languages - and several demonic ones.
- She's a very determined individual. When she decides something needs to be done, she really will put all her effort into accomplishing it.
Weaknesses:
- She's pretty easily confused when it comes to human habits - things that most people take for granted tend to completely baffle Anya.
- She seems to be constantly saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, and...really just has no sense of tact whatsoever.
- Being a vengeance demon, Anya has a tendency to hold grudges...even when she can't really afford to.
- Anya has a bit of an identity problem. She tends to define herself through external means - being a vengeance demon, or Xander's fiance, for instance, without really giving thought to who she actually is. And the thought that she doesn't really know who she is scares her a bit.
- And then there's her pendant - the one she wears on her at all times. If it were to be destroyed, she'd lose her powers and more or less become mortal again.
Powers:
- Immortality - Kinda obvious, given that...she's centuries old and barely looks like she's hit thirty.
- Teleportation.
- Wish Granting. Though...she is a vengeance demon, so expect there to be a catch.
- Telekinesis.
- Enhanced strength & durability.
- Slight empathic abilities - that is to say, she can't just sense whatever you're feeling at any given moment - but if you're experiencing any emotions that relate to vengeance (anger, pain, extreme amounts of grief), she'll be able to pick up on it.
Personality: Anya is...just a bit unusual, I suppose you could say, from both a human's and a demon's perspective. From a human's because she has very little knowledge - nor does she seem particularly inclined to try and gain that knowledge - of social human customs. Though she is very fluent in modern English (as she is in most languages), she sometimes displays a rather odd way of speaking - even, direct, with word selection that is seemingly quite precise. And even more strange than her manner of speaking is what she says. Tact is evidently a foreign concept to the vengeance demon. She is extremely blunt, straightforward, and matter-of-fact with seemingly little regard for the feelings of whoever she's speaking to. Truthfully it really isn't that she's trying to be mean or even harsh, though - she actually sincerely seems to have no idea she's saying anything wrong.
Most people find Anya's directness either amusing, insulting, or irritating - or perhaps some mixture of the three. On top of all of that, she's a somewhat cynical, sarcastic individual who seems to think the majority of the shenanigans that humans get up to are just silly. Her demeanor is usually fairly chipper and well-meant, but most of the time aloof...especially when she doesn't know or trust a person very much. Anya is quite capable of making attachments to people, but she doesn't like admitting it and she doesn't often show it. The thing is, though, if Anya actually does decide she cares about you there's a sort of unspoken, unquestionable loyalty that develops on her part. She may go on and try to pretend that she could care less about you, but it doesn't change the fact that she does - and that's what sets her apart from most demons as well as humans.
Because when it comes down to it, she really does try to do the right thing. Sure her morals are a bit...confused at times, and there are times when she can be a bit selfish, but Anya is fully capable of feeling a very real sense of compassion. In fact, when she's not babbling out something blunt or otherwise distinctly offensive, she's generally pretty likable. She's certainly quite friendly, even towards the most stand-offish of individuals, and she's also inquisitive, sincere, and for the most part pretty sweet-natured.
As long as you're not a rabbit. She really, really doesn't like rabbits.
Mother: Unknown. Father: Unknown. Siblings: None. Other Family: None. Friends: Halfrek, Xander Harris, Buffy Summers, Willow Rosenberg, Rupert Giles, and Spike. Enemies: D'Hoffryn. Any demons employed by him to kill her. Anyone she might have cursed in the past. Home town: Sjornjost, Sweden. Current residence: Sunnydale, California. History: Roughly eleven hundred years ago, Anya was born in a tiny Swedish village. Her name, then, was Aud. Life in her village was primitive and simple, as long as one were to obey the rules society set down. Aud, however, wasn't exactly adept at this. She was an extremely inquisitive individual who did not hesitate to speak her mind, and her fellow villagers did not look kindly upon such qualities. Aud's peculiar nature soon set her at odds with the people living around her, and as she grew older she became known as something of an outcast.
Somehow, however, this never seemed to bother her. Aud either did not notice the townspeople's irritation, or didn't care. She was happy with the simplicity of her life, especially after the finding the one person who seemed to be able to tolerate her: Olaf. Olaf was a large, blundering man who thought quite a lot of himself and...not so much of others. But he put up with her, and could usually manage to listen to her various ramblings without much more complaint than a few occasional grumbles. And so Aud grew to love him dearly for it--or at least thought she did. The two were soon married, and for a time she was more or less happy.
Of course, this did not last. Olaf's attentions grew more fleeting as he became more and more impatient with his talkative wife, and as he grew more distant, Aud began to grow suspicious. Upon investigating further, she discovered that her husband was cheating on her with a local barmaiden--a fact that most of the village already seemed to be aware of. Enraged and humiliated, Aud immediately sought revenge. Though she was not a witch, she had some knowledge of herbs and basic magic spells, and using this she literally turned Olaf into a troll in an act of vengeance.
An angry and bewildered Olaf immediately wreaked havoc on the village, and Aud was left to coldly watch the chaotic effects of her spell from the sidelines. At this time, she was approached by an ancient, powerful demon by the name of D'Hoffryn. D'Hoffryn, as he explained, was a leader of a group of creatures known as vengeance demons. He recruited humans who showed a particular vindictive streak, and ascended them to demonic level...if they would agree to work for him in return, of course. He made this offer to Aud, convincing her that it was "her destiny". Broken, spiteful, and with a newfound harsh outlook on the cruel world she lived in, Aud agreed.
And so she became a new entity, taking on a new name in order to leave her human life behind completely. She became known as Anyanka, patron saint of scorned women, and quickly earned a fearsome reputation as one of the most ruthless, merciless vengeance demons in existence. For a thousand years, Anyanka took pleasure in traveling the world and wreaking havoc wherever she went. Wherever she sensed pain and heartbreak, she would sweep in an manipulate the broken individual in question, slyly provoking their anger and will to seek revenge. Eventually, Anyanka would trick her victims into wishing something horrible on whoever had hurt them...and if these wishes weren't chaotic enough for her satisfaction, she would twist them into something even more awful. Anyanka was the very embodiment of "be careful what you wish for". With every wish she granted, and every act of vengeance she committed, she lost more and more of her humanity. In time, Anyanka grew to thoroughly enjoy the turmoil she created, which ranged from turning boys into slugs to literally starting wars (just ask, and she'll enthusiastically tell you about her part in beginning the Russian Revolution). Though in her own eyes her work was some twisted form of dealing out justice, Anyanka soon became consumed by her demonic identity. She grew powerful, terrible, feared.
...Then, just like that, it ended. In the year of 1997, Anyanka's thirst for vengeance brought her to the little town of Sunnydale, California. Her chosen client: a high school student by the name of Cordelia Chase, who was distraught after discovering her boyfriend had cheated on her. Anyanka tricked Cordelia into making a wish that the demon would use to create a horrific alternate universe--some of her most devastating work yet. Unfortunately for Anyanka, Cordelia happened to be associated with Buffy Summers, the infamous vampire slayer. Any creatures of the night who tried messing around in Sunnydale had Buffy to deal with, as Anyanka would soon discover. To break out of the alternate dimension and undo Anyanka's magic, Buffy and her friends destroyed the demon's power source: her jade necklace.
The action not only reversed Cordelia's wish, but also rendered Anyanka powerless and mortal. In short, she became human once again. At first, she was absolutely infuriated and immediately sought to regain her powers. She tried everything from spell-casting to appealing to D'Hoffryn itself, but the reality was that she was hopelessly trapped in the human world. As a high school student, no less. With high school student feelings. Talk about hell.
With no other choice but to try and blend into this world, Anyanka adopted a human name: Anya Jenkins. She would soon discover that she'd highly underestimated the effects her newfound humanity would have on her, starting with her growing attraction to one Xander Harris(ironically, the very boy she'd come to Sunnydale to seek vengeance against). As time went by, Anya slowly began to find herself falling in love with him, and becoming entangled in his life. Xander happened to be good friends with Buffy and her little gang--and while Anya only reluctantly accepted them at first, she eventually found herself a willing member of their little group. As the years went by and she forged stronger connections with these people, Anya found herself experiencing emotions she hadn't felt in over a thousand years: friendship, grief, loyalty, love. The ex-demon began to change and soften, succumbing to these feelings and understanding for the first time what humanity really meant.
That is - right up until the moment she was more or less dumped. Or, more accurately, left at the altar on the day of her wedding. Out of sheer spite and grief, and because she really...had nothing else left as far as she was concerned, Anya accepted D'Hoffryn's offer to return to being a demon again. ...Trouble was, it wasn't as easy as she remembered it. Her guilty conscience and newly rediscovered human emotions made it very difficult to wreak the sort of havoc D'Hoffryn expected from her - and soon the majority of the demonic community began to notice as well. Mutterings began - that D'Hoffryn couldn't control the demons who worked for him, that Anya was losing her touch, that she was becoming soft - and her friend and fellow vengeance demon, Halfrek, warned her that if things continued the way they were going? It most likely wasn't going to end well.
So in a panicked attempt to regain her former ruthlessness, Anya granted the wish of a girl who'd been humiliated by an entire college fraternity. The girl's wish involved the boys "knowing how it feels to have their hearts ripped out", which Anya interpreted...quite literally, to say the least. Newly responsible for the murders of about a dozen frat boys, she was stricken with an unexpected, sickening wave of horror and remorse - but feigned coldness and contempt in an attempt to get Buffy to kill her. In the midst of her fight with the slayer, however, D'Hoffryn appeared to settle the matter. Anya, however, took this opportunity to plead with him to reverse the effects of her wish; to bring the boys she'd killed back. D'Hoffryn warned her that such a deed would cost the life of a vengeance demon, a term which Anya readily accepted under the assumption that it was her own life that was to be given.
D'Hoffryn, however, didn't intend on letting her off so easily. Furious and disdainful at her display of disloyalty, he killed Halfrek instead of her - and left her to live with the fact that she was responsible for the other demon's death.
